TPV is a thermoplastic vulcanisate. This is a type of thermoplastic elastomer consists of crosslinked (or vulcanised) rubber particles in a thermoplastic matrix. In most cases it consists of vulcanised EPDM rubber in a PP matrix. Most of the material is made up of the rubber part, which determines the mechanical properties, while the smaller part of PP enables the rubber particles to flow as a thermoplastic material above the melting point of PP. Sometimes also paraffinic oil is present in the mixture to enhance flow and reduce the hardness. The material is produced using dynamic vulcanisation: in this process EPDM and PP are molten and mixed together, the EPDM becomes dispersed as small droplets in the PP and vulcanises at the same time. This changes the rubber from a molten polymer into elastic solid particles.
Specific properties
Density: Approximately 0.95 g/cm3.
Mechanical properties: A large variety of hardnesses are available, between 25 shore A to 50 shore D.
Thermal properties: The melting point is ca. 165 °C (as in PP).
Chemical resistance: Compared to non-vulcanised polyolefin based thermoplastic elastomers, TPV’s have a good resistance to oil, fuels and cooling liquids.
Colour/surface
Cream coloured, non-transparent. Low gloss non-slip surface. Can be coloured using polyolefin based masterbatches.
Processing
Can be injection moulded, but also extruded into profiles and seals. In this application it can also be foamed.
Applications
Automotive: air ducts, strut and cable covers, boots and bellows, shock mounts, brake-cable covers, sound deadeners, bushings, weather-strips, soft-touch interior components
Consumer: soft-touch grips such as knife handles, tool handles, toothbrush grips, pen barrels, sporting goods grips and handles, luggage handles
Medical: tubing, plunger tips, syringe seals and caps, vial and pipette closures, cable coating, diaphragms, bellows
Industrial: gaskets, seals, bumpers, wheels, casters, rollers, dust covers, grips, handles, O-rings, couplings
